And Here For 'Managing Abandonment Issues Through Recovery'
Poetry isn't a medium made for effeminate pansies. Good poetry rarely rhymes and it doesn't need to sound artsy. Good poetry is like good therapy - it cuts your heart open. It names truth with an edge. It makes you think and it makes you feel. I am far from a great poet but I have recorded a couple of my efforts for you this week just for fun.
The first reading is called 'WUDGE'. Since September 6th was my late mother's birthday I share it in honor of her. As a little guy one of my best memories was of my mother making fudge. I guess I called it wudge when I was really little. The poem speak about the abandonment that I felt from my mother. Our childhood is the very foundation of our mental health and of our model for loving and being loved. That is an issue for most of us, virtually all of us, in fact. Click the link and it will bring you to another page entitled WUDGE then you need to hit the WUDGE link and you will get an audio player that will play the reading. WUDGE by Mark Smith I struggle a bit with food addiction and you can certainly see why.
I have also struggled with Relationship Addiction in my life. During a period from 2005 to 2008 that needy little fellow hungered for inappropriate and addictive attention. Out of control addiction results in negative consequences and that was certainly the case for me. I know that I am far from being alone with that! The next piece is based on a recent dream that I had. In the dream about a hundred friends dressed in bright clothing gathered in a Red Rock Canyon sort of like where John Tesh has concerts.
We were laughing, celebrating, singing and playing the drums. It felt like a happy tribe that was celebrating a huge victory. When I woke up I knew what the dream meant. The tribe represented the various aspects of my Recovery process, all the ways that I have built momentum in getting healthier, not acting out in addiction and establishing stability. I felt great the rest of the day after experiencing such a vivid and positive dream. Check it out CONQUERING TRIBE by Mark Smith The lines 'yet, with integrity and consistency your credits will pile up my mirror told me' reflected my practice of taping fortune cookie sayings on my mirror. My favorite word in the English language is the word 'integrity'. Having integrity is what Recovery and getting healthier is all about. Healing a marriage, quitting an addiction and re-establishing personal integrity very much feels like pushing a boulder up a very steep hill, I assure you. It is a lot of work and it will take everything that you've got to get to the top of that hill. What I have experienced now though some three years alter is a momentum that is exciting, solid, real, full of hope and yes, quite a relief. Working on yourself, therapy, 12 Step Work, emotional healing - Recovery really does work. Keep pushing that boulder up the hill. Do the right things. Busy yourself with healthy pursuits. Be clear and unbending with your healthy goals. Do not compromise your progress with addictive behaviors again. Celebrating in a safe and joyful place beats the hell out of self-destruction, despair and hopelessness. My wish for all of you is for every one of you to get to beat the drums of progress, joy, forgiveness, self-actualization and victory in your Recovery process!
