I'm old enough to have LOVED director Edward Zwick's emotionally smart 'thirtysomething' way back in the day. No wonder I loved Zwick's 'Love and Other Drugs'. He presents life and love with a genuine, stirring depth of connection. I totally disagree with USA's Claudia Puig's take that "the movie unevenly weds the satirical and the sentimental". The movie was funny, sexy and challenging. It was a fantastic, believable, moving love story.

Love is painful. It can be extremely messy. It pierces psychological defenses. Negotiating a solid love bond involves some ups and downs and usually a heart wrenching breakup or two. The movie exposed the childhood emotional wounds of the characters in a way that made sense and engendered empathy. A blind, 'stoned on love' process that doesn't include many gut wrenching moments before the full commitment deal is sealed won't have much staying power years later when the serious crap really hits the fan. Love gives you an opportunity to become a better person. It is about a hell of a lot more than sexual intensity or compatibility. The movie was a character study on the emptiness of success and/or sexual conquests without love, commitment, intimacy and integrity.

I thought Anne Hathaway was brilliant! Her portrayal of 26 year old a Parkinson's patient was intense and thought provoking although it was strange seeing her in such a sarcastic, sexually enthusiastic role. Jake Gyllenhaal was charming, boyish, sincere and a lot of fun. I give this movie two thumbs up and four very enthusiastic stars. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry. It will make you re-think aspects of your relationship. That is a lot of therapy and entertainment for only ten bucks! Go see it. You'll like it a lot.
